South Africa Museum and Company Gardens
Company Gardens – The garden is the oldest in the country and was formally established in 1652 by Dutch settlers who sought to establish a victualling station to service and re-provision spice-trading sailing shops on the long sea route to the east. The Company Gardens in the middle of the CBD is also home to a beautiful rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and bird aviary. It is adjacent to numerous important landmarks, including the present-day Houses of Parliament, the Iziko South Africa Museum and Planetarium, the SA National Gallery and other historical buildings.
The park and heritage site was originally established in the early 1650s by the European settlers arriving in the area. The gardens provided fresh fruit and vegetables to the ships seeking replenishment when rounding the Cape on their journey to the East. The Gardens now offer a natural retreat from the bustle of the City. Finish your tour of the Company Gardens with a stop at the South African Museum which houses a variety of important African zoology, palaeontology and archaeology collections.
The Castle of Good Hope
Castle of Good Hope – One of the oldest buildings in South Africa. It was built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a maritime replenishment station.
